If you grew up in the Caribbean, like me, or in area populated with people of Caribbean heritage, chances are you’ve had turmeric before. It is the made ingredient in Caribbean curry recipes such as roti, curry chicken and more. It is also they key ingredient in many Asian dishes.

Turmeric has gained popularity recently because preliminary research shows that it has anti-cancer properties. While the scientific verdict is still out how to use the beneficial compounds in turmeric, it is common knowledge that turmeric has been used for centuries in beauty, cooking and as a natural remedy. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and astringent properties. Here are two ways your can use tumeric for your face and in your food.

Sweet Turmeric Facial Mask

1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 tablespoon honey (warmed)
1 teaspoon olive oil

Combine ingredients in a bowl and mix well
Apply to face & neck area
Keep mask on for atleast 10 minutes
Rinse with warm water
Follow with your preferred moisturizer

The honey is antibacterial and moisturizes the skin, the olive oil nourishes and the turmeric cleanses and protects the skin.
** Caution: Turmeric can stain yellow so be careful with you clothes and other items.

The next recipe, Sauteed Cauliflower & Spinach, is one of my favorite, it can be served warm or cold which makes it a great option year round.
