The HEAL project, an arm of the Sankofa Farmers Market, invited me to teach a class with their students and discuss my experience as a young entrepreneur. We had fun with handmade body lotions. We also talked about my experience creating natural skincare products and lessons I am learning along the way.
Lessons in Leadership: Fostering relationships has been an important part of my continued growth as a person and entrepreneur. So I shared 3 things I thought were important for successful relationships and moving forward in this world. Each point is tweetable so click to share the one you like the most.
- Never burn bridges. Even if someone has stepped all over you, turn the other cheek and/or keep it positive. You never know who you’ll need down the road.
- Surround yourself with people who can encourage you and help you accomplish your goals.
- Don’t be afraid to admit what you don’t know, once you do, you’ll be on your way to figuring it out.
Now onto the handmade lotion experience: We made a simple lotion recipe with coconut and olive oil. Here we are using a double boiler to heat the ingredient so we can mix/emulsify them to make a lotion.
Each student chose their scent blend and mixed it up to create a unique scented lotion. I chose a sweet orange, spearmint, bergamot and lavender essential oil blend that was super refreshing. I donated it to Good Work Network for the grand opening/dedication of their new building on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in New Orleans. Here we are exploring scents. The unscented lotion on the (first photo on the left) doesn’t have much of a scent.
This was a fun experience and I look forward to another session with the HEAL project.
What lessons would your share on growing as a person and leader? I’d love to read your input!
