Ben.ar.dett here to launch, Bèl of the Week, the latest Senica series designed to celebrate you, our beautiful clients and partners who are doing beautiful things. Amy Knoll of Bon Castor is our inaugural feature and one of our favorite retailers. Let’s get started with the interview!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up and lived in Chicago until 2009 when I decided to join my boyfriend in his return to New Orleans. When I have a cold, my accent comes out. I live in the Marigny and own Bon Castor in the Bywater. My commute is 13 minutes by foot, unless I gossip with the neighbors on the way (I always gossip with the neighbors on the way).
What is the inspiration for your work?
I decided to open the shop because I was looking for a place to buy a gift in the neighborhood and wanted to support my artisan neighbors. When we found the space on Burgundy I thought it would be a great place to try it out. The shop opened in February of 2012 with 25 artisans and now we have over 100.
Where do you see yourself in 2 years time?
Two years from now I hope to expand our business to e-commerce and keep preaching the gospel of handmade goods from New Orleans. We’ve got something extraordinary going on over here and it’s been great to be a part of showing it off.
What is your proudest accomplishment to date?
I know it sounds hokey, but when my Mom first saw the shop and was here for the grand opening. She was so much fun and instantly understood the value of what the shop was and why we do it.
What is your favorite Senica product and why?
Bay Bay shea butter moisturizer. I love the spiciness of the scent and the amazing moisture without greasiness. My boyfriend ‘borrows’ it.
Words to live by.
When you become part of something, in some way you count. It could be a march; it could be a rally, even a brief one. You’re part of something, and you suddenly realize you count. To count is very important. ~ Studs Terkel

How can we connect with you?
The best place to connect is the shop’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/boncastor. We tell stories about the artists who are in the shop and have great conversations about neighborhood events.
