Behind the Scenes: A trip to the bee yard

Have you ever wondered what the ‘local’ story behind the beeswax we source for the Blemish Balm is? Sourcing amazing ingredients is essential to creating amazing products. When I began to formulate the Blemish Balm over a decade ago, I knew every ingredient needed to be top notch. So, I called the beekeeper who makes the honey I’ve been eating for years. That’s where our connection began. Fast forward to last week where our schedules synced for a visit to his apiary and a wealth of knowledge that is only the tip of the iceberg when it come to bees.

You get to meet Jay, in the latest broadcast from Sénica. He is the local beekeeper who produces honey 🍯 using pesticide-free practices. Jay was kind enough to host me and give me an intro to beekeeping. I truly appreciate the opportunity to learn more about bees and how their way of life intersects with the artisan body care products we create at Sénica. I have an innate love for nature and this time was truly phenomenal because I was surrounded by nature and also learning.

Learning what the role of smoke is in keeping bees calm while working a hive.

And then there was the process of requeening as well as swarming and producing or buying queens for your hive.

Break time was another opportunity to hydrate and soak in more from Jay’s extensive knowledge.

And then there is the sweet honey, one of the products created from the hives. There is also beeswax, propolis, and pollen. I’ll stop here and look forward to perhaps sharing in future.
